IRS Tax Relief for House Cleaners and Maid Services Get Help With Back Taxes on Cash, Zelle and Card Income
Updated
House cleaning money comes in as cash on the counter, a Zelle transfer, a card payment or an app payout, and nobody takes tax out of any of it. If a few years went by without filing or without estimated payments, we take over the IRS side and work the balance into a program that fits what your business really clears.
$400
Net earnings from cleaning that bring 15.3% self-employment tax, even if no client ever sends you a tax form.
How it happens
Why House Cleaners Owe the IRS More Than They Expect
Your clients pay you out of their own pockets, and a homeowner's personal payments aren't reportable on a 1099 (IRS, Form 1099-NEC instructions). So unlike a contractor who works for businesses, you may never see a tax form for most of your cleaning income. It's still taxable, every dollar of it.
Cards work differently. A card processor sends a 1099-K for whatever you took in, no matter how small, and payment apps report once you pass $20,000 and 200 transactions in a year (IRS, Form 1099-K). So the IRS sees one slice of your income, and nobody withheld a cent from any of it.
On top of income tax, net earnings of $400 or more bring 15.3% self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare (IRS, self-employment tax). If you expect to owe $1,000 or more, the IRS wants estimated payments during the year. You can even send them weekly, as long as each quarter is covered (IRS, estimated taxes).

The IRS Problems House Cleaners Bring Us
Some started cleaning on their own and never thought of it as a business. Others grew a team of six and stopped filing when the paperwork got ahead of them.
Years Without Filing
With card or app 1099-Ks on file and no return, the IRS can file a substitute return that may not credit your supplies, mileage or helpers. We file the real returns so the balance starts from what you actually kept.

Money that never came with a form still belongs on the return. We rebuild your income from bank records, figure out what's owed, and set it up so you can pay it down alongside this year's taxes.
See how we helpMissed Estimated Payments
Without quarterly payments, April brings the whole year's bill plus an underpayment penalty, and the next year starts behind. We set up a payment plan for the old balance and a weekly or monthly estimate habit for the new one.

If you assign the houses, set the hours, buy the products and train each cleaner your way, the IRS may say they're employees and assess payroll taxes. We represent you if it comes up and help you understand where you stand.
See how we helpA Frozen Bank Account
When clients pay by transfer, your bank account is where the business lives. A bank levy freezes what's there for 21 days before the bank sends it. We file Power of Attorney and request a release once a plan or program is in motion.
See how we helpAn Audit That Totals Your Bank Deposits
An examiner can total every deposit in your accounts and compare it with the income on your return. Transfers between your own accounts and money that isn't income should come out of that total, and we make sure the IRS takes them out.

The trade by the numbers
Who Does the Cleaning in American Homes
About 1.33 million people worked as maids and housekeeping cleaners in 2025. Roughly 1 in 7 were self-employed, and about 1 in 5 worked directly for private households (BLS Employment Projections). That's the part of the trade where money arrives with no withholding and none of the paperwork an employer would send.
With no W-2 and few 1099s, your own return is the only place most of your income gets reported. Skip it for a year or two and the IRS sees just the card and app slice, which means any bill it builds is wrong in both directions: missing your expenses and missing income you'll still need to report.

Unfiled years
What the IRS Sees When a House Cleaner Doesn't File
The IRS matches the tax forms it receives against the returns people file. For a house cleaner, those forms might be a 1099-K from a card processor and one from a payment app. Cash, checks and transfers from homeowners usually arrive with no form at all.
When no return shows up, the IRS may file a substitute return from what it can see, without the deductions you were entitled to. You'll get a CP3219N, a 90-day letter, and if you don't file your own return or petition Tax Court in that window, the IRS assesses its numbers (IRS, past due returns).
Unfiled years cost you in another way, too. Self-employment income on a return you never filed doesn't get reported to Social Security, so those years don't earn credits toward retirement or disability. And any refund you were owed for a year is gone three years after its due date.
If the IRS later audits instead, it can add up your bank deposits and compare the total with your reported income (IRM 4.10.4). Clean records of what was a transfer, a gift or a refund make that much easier, and we help you build them.
How unfiled cleaning income becomes a bill
-
Income Arrives Without Forms
Clients pay cash, check or transfer, and nothing is withheld.
-
The IRS Sees Part of It
Card and app 1099-Ks arrive with no return to match them.
-
A Substitute Return Is Filed
The IRS figures tax on what it saw, without your expenses.
-
Notices, Then a Levy
After the 90-day letter, unpaid tax moves to collection notices and possibly a bank levy.
-
Real Returns, Then a Plan
We file the missing years with your expenses and propose a program. The IRS decides.

You Don't Have to Explain How It Happened
You clean people's homes and keep their business to yourself, and you're probably used to carrying your own worries the same way. Falling behind when nobody ever took tax out of your pay is easy to do, it happens to hardworking people, and we won't judge how it happened.
Your consultation is free and confidential. Once you hire us and Power of Attorney is on file, the IRS deals with us, so the calls and the back-and-forth stop landing on you.

IRS programs
IRS Programs That Fit House Cleaners
Installment Agreement
Sole proprietors apply as individuals. Owing $50,000 or less with every return filed can qualify you to apply online, and we size the payment so it holds up through slow months.
Offer in Compromise
If what you earn cleaning, after basic living costs, will never cover the balance, an offer may settle it for less. We check the IRS math with you first.
Currently Not Collectible
When your income only covers rent, food and getting to your clients, the IRS can pause collection. Interest keeps adding while it's paused, so we revisit it when work picks up.
Penalty Abatement
Late-filing and late-payment penalties can come off with first-time abatement after three clean years, or for reasonable cause like a serious illness in the family.

The Company was great in general and Nicole Inoa was spectacular in particular! Everyone I've ever had dealings with at ITR was amazingly dedicated and efficient. They managed to quite painlessly unburden me of WAY over a decade of unpaid federal taxes. A tremendous burden is FINALLY in the rear mirror. I simply could not be any happier!!
I am impressed by their kindness and professionalism. They are resolving years of tax let’s say neglect 🤣for me for what I feel is very reasonable cost considering. I will be so relieved to have this behind me. Thank you 🙏
Innovative tax relief has been great for helping me navigate the intimidating process of getting my taxes in order. My case manager Keiner has been very diligent in getting my taxes returns completed, following up and fulfilling my request to add additional documents, and submitting my returns quickly for processing. I don’t know how I would do this without him!
