Why Military Families and Small Businesses in San Antonio End Up Owing the IRS
San Antonio has been an Army and Air Force town for a long time. Fort Sam Houston dates to 1845, and today JBSA, the joint base made up of Fort Sam Houston, Lackland and Randolph, counts 74,713 direct employees, 33,256 of them on active duty. Add the retirees who stayed and the spouses with side businesses, and military pay reaches well beyond the gates.
The rest of the local economy leans on small business and visitors. Taquerías, panaderías, body shops, salons and construction crews, many of them family-run and Spanish-speaking, plus the hotel and restaurant jobs along the River Walk. Cash sales, tips and payroll deposits are where IRS trouble usually starts for these businesses.
Since Texas has no state income tax, the letters here almost always come from the IRS. We work in English and Spanish, pull your IRS transcripts, and build a plan from the real numbers. Nobody here is going to lecture you about how it got this far.
Tax relief in San Antonio, by trade
The People in San Antonio Who Call Us
Uniforms, aprons, hard hats and steering wheels. The work is different, and so is the reason each person ended up owing. Here's what those cases look like.
Active-Duty Service Members at JBSA
A deployment, a PCS move or a spouse's job change can throw off withholding for a whole year. The IRS has specific relief for people in uniform, including payment deferral and a 6% interest cap. We make sure you ask for what applies.
Veterans and Military Retirees in Second Careers
Plenty of retirees stay in the area and pick up contract or consulting work. That income comes on a 1099 with nothing withheld and self-employment tax on top. We file the missing years and set up a plan the IRS will consider.
Family Businesses and Neighborhood Shops
Taquerías, panaderías, tire shops and salons often run on cash and family labor. When sales aren't tracked and payroll isn't deposited, the IRS sees a gap. We help you rebuild the books and get the open quarters filed.
Restaurant and Hotel Workers on Tips
Servers, bartenders and bellhops along the River Walk earn a big part of their pay in tips. Unreported tips add up to back taxes, and they also block the new federal tips deduction. We sort out past years and get you filing cleanly.
Contractors and Construction Crews
Roofers, framers, drywall hangers and remodelers get paid by the job, often on a 1099 or in cash. With nothing withheld, one good year can mean a bill you can't pay at once. We file with your real costs and request a plan.
Owner-Operators on the I-35 Corridor
Drivers hauling between here and Laredo pay their own taxes, including 15.3% self-employment tax. Fall behind and the IRS can levy what your broker owes you. We open the conversation with the IRS and request a release once a plan is filed.
Military pay
Military Pay, PCS Moves and the IRS in San Antonio
Service members in San Antonio deal with tax rules most civilians never see. A permanent change of station under military orders is one of the few moves where the government's moving help stays tax-free, and unreimbursed costs can still be deducted. Civilian moves lost both breaks.
If you serve in a combat zone, your filing and payment deadlines are extended by at least 180 days after you leave, plus the days you had left when you went in. And if service hurts your ability to pay, the IRS lets you request a deferral or a lower interest rate.
Where people get stuck is the year everything changes at once: a separation, a spouse's new job, a first contract role. Withholding that worked on active duty stops matching your income, and the balance shows up the next April.
Family businesses
Payroll, Cash and Tips at Family Businesses in San Antonio
A lot of businesses in San Antonio are run by a family, with a cousin on the register and a nephew in the kitchen. When money is tight, the payroll deposit is the one that slides. The IRS treats that money as held in trust for your employees, so it can hold the owner personally responsible.
Cash is the other weak spot. Sales that never hit the books, tips that never got reported, a bank account that shows more coming in than the return does. None of that disappears when you finally file. We rebuild the numbers with you, file the open quarters and years, and then go to the IRS with a plan.
Local help
IRS Office, Clinics and Advocates in San Antonio
The IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center in San Antonio is at 8122 Datapoint Drive, Suite 210, and it works by appointment through 844-545-5640. Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, which keeps an office on Console Drive, runs a Low Income Taxpayer Clinic for people whose income qualifies.
There's no Taxpayer Advocate Service office in the city, so local cases go through the Austin office or Form 911. If you'd rather not chase any of it, give us Power of Attorney and we handle the IRS calls, letters and meetings for you.
Discreet help
You Don't Have to Explain How It Happened
Owing the IRS can feel like something to hide. Plenty of the people who call us haven't told anyone, and some stopped opening the mail a while ago. That's far more common than it feels, and it's nothing we judge.
Your consultation is free and confidential. Once you hire us and Power of Attorney is on file, the IRS deals with us, so the calls and the back-and-forth stop landing on you.
How We Keep It Discreet
- A free, confidential first conversation
- No judgment about how it happened
- Once Power of Attorney is filed, the IRS contacts us
- Phone, secure document portal, and video, with no office visit

How We Resolve IRS Debt in San Antonio
Military paychecks, family restaurants, tips and 1099 work all lead to IRS balances in San Antonio. If you owe IRS money, these are the tax resolution services we put to work, explained with the Bexar County numbers the IRS uses. We handle every case in English or Spanish, whichever you prefer.
IRS payment plans
IRS Installment Agreements and Payment Plans in San Antonio
$2,728 a month
IRS 2026 housing and utilities allowance for a family of four in Bexar County.
For most families in San Antonio, a monthly installment agreement is the most practical way out. A balance of $50,000 or less usually qualifies for a streamlined plan without a full financial statement, and the IRS generally can't levy while the agreement is in effect.
Bigger balances call for Form 433-A, where the IRS checks your spending against Bexar County figures. For 2026, it allows $2,728 a month for housing and utilities for a family of four, lower than the big counties up I-35. That's why we document every real expense, from the truck note to a parent's medicine.
Fresh Start
The IRS Fresh Start Program for San Antonio Families
$10,000
The general lien filing threshold the IRS adopted under Fresh Start.
Fresh Start is the label for IRS collection changes adopted in 2011. The general threshold for filing a federal tax lien rose to $10,000, streamlined payment plans opened up to balances of $50,000, and Offers in Compromise started giving more weight to basic living costs.
In San Antonio, we hear about Fresh Start mostly from late-night TV and Spanish-language radio ads that make it sound like the IRS erases debt. It doesn't work that way. Fresh Start makes some programs easier to reach, and the IRS still reviews each case.
Wage garnishment
How to Stop an IRS Wage Garnishment in San Antonio
74,713 jobs
Direct employees at JBSA, the city's joint military base, in 2025, including 33,256 active-duty personnel.
A wage garnishment is the last stop on a trail of IRS letters. The IRS mails a CP504, then a final notice called the LT11 or Letter 1058. From that letter, you have 30 days to request a Collection Due Process hearing. After that, the levy can go straight to your employer.
JBSA, the joint military base, alone has 74,713 direct employees, and the hospitals, hotels and call centers around San Antonio employ many more. Wherever you work, a wage levy keeps taking everything above the Publication 1494 exempt amount until the IRS releases it. Getting a plan or hardship status approved is usually what leads to that release.
Offer in Compromise
Offer in Compromise Help in San Antonio
$205 + 20%
What goes in with Form 656: the $205 fee and 20% of a lump-sum offer.
An Offer in Compromise is a way to settle IRS debt for less than the full balance when you can't pay it all before the collection statute expiration date. The package includes Form 656, Form 433-A (OIC), a $205 application fee and, for a lump-sum offer, 20% of the amount up front.
Bexar County's allowances are modest next to Austin or Plano, so the IRS expects more of each paycheck to go toward the debt. An offer can still make sense for an older taquería owner with little equity, or a retiree living on a fixed check. We test the math first so you don't pay a fee for an offer that can't work.
Liens and levies
IRS Tax Lien and Bank Levy Help in San Antonio
21 days
The bank's hold on levied funds before they are sent to the IRS.
A federal tax lien is a notice, filed in the Bexar County records, that the IRS has a claim on your house, your truck and your business equipment. A levy is the actual seizure. For a family business in San Antonio, the levy that stops everything is usually the one on the operating account.
Once a bank account is levied, the bank sits on the money for 21 days before sending it to the IRS. That's the window for a bank levy release, and it closes fast. If a lien is blocking the sale or refinance of a house, we can ask for a discharge or subordination, or a withdrawal once a direct debit plan qualifies.
Back taxes
Back Taxes and Unfiled Returns in San Antonio
$25,000
The most in qualified tips a worker can deduct from 2025 on, but only tips that are reported count.
Back taxes in San Antonio often trace to cash. Tips on the River Walk, cash sales at a panadería or tire shop, and job pay for roofers and drywall crews all count as income whether or not anyone issued a form. Family businesses also fall behind on 941 payroll tax deposits during a slow stretch.
If the IRS already filed a substitute return for a missing year, it used only the income it could see and none of your costs. We rebuild those years from bank deposits and receipts and file real returns, since the IRS won't settle anything while returns are still missing. Tips that are properly reported can also count toward the new federal tips deduction.
Currently Not Collectible
Currently Not Collectible Status in San Antonio
$1,977 a month
IRS 2026 housing and utilities allowance for one person in Bexar County.
If you're living on Social Security, a small pension or reduced hours in San Antonio and can't spare anything for the IRS, the account can be placed in currently not collectible status. The IRS stops levies and collection while the status holds, though interest keeps adding up and a lien can still be filed.
The IRS measures hardship against its own figures, like $1,977 a month for housing and utilities for one person in Bexar County and $291 a month to run a car. Service members have their own options: Publication 3 allows a payment deferral of up to 180 days after release when military service affects your ability to pay.
Penalty abatement
IRS Penalty Abatement in San Antonio
June 15, 2021
The IRS deadline for all of Texas, Bexar County included, after Winter Storm Uri.
Penalty abatement can take failure-to-file and failure-to-pay penalties off a balance. The two usual routes are first-time relief, for people with a clean record in the three prior years, and reasonable cause, such as a serious illness, a death in the family or a deployment that kept you from filing.
For Bexar County, the big recent disaster was Winter Storm Uri. The IRS gave all of Texas until June 15, 2021 to file and pay, and it abated penalties on payroll deposits due February 11 through 25 if they were made by February 26. If a penalty landed inside those dates, it's worth asking the IRS to remove it.
IRS audits
IRS Audit Representation in San Antonio
8122 Datapoint Dr.
The IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center in San Antonio (Suite 210), by appointment only.
Cash-heavy businesses in San Antonio get audit letters that compare bank deposits with reported sales. Most are handled by mail. If yours becomes an in-person office audit, it would be at an IRS office in the area, and the Taxpayer Assistance Center here is at 8122 Datapoint Drive, Suite 210, by appointment at 844-545-5640.
Once Power of Attorney is filed, an enrolled agent can meet the examiner in your place and answer in English while we explain every step to you in Spanish. We also handle 941 payroll exams and innocent spouse relief requests when a joint return's debt came from an ex-spouse's business.
