82%
of businesses in Dallas have fewer than 20 employees, so the owner is often the one running payroll.

Why Small Shops and Big Earners in Dallas Both Owe the IRS
Most businesses in Dallas are small. City figures put 82% of them under 20 employees, which usually means the owner signs the payroll checks and decides which bills can wait. When cash gets tight, the 941 deposit is the easiest one to push to next week. The IRS doesn't see it that way.
The other group we hear from earns well but unevenly. Agents closing on commission, consultants billing on a 1099, managers whose bonus or stock vest had a flat 22% withheld when their bracket runs higher. Nothing feels off until April, and then the balance is bigger than the savings account.
With no personal income tax in Texas, the agency writing to you about a balance in Dallas County is the IRS. That keeps the work focused. We pull your IRS account transcripts, find every open year and every balance, and build the plan from what the IRS actually has on file.
Tax relief in Dallas, by trade
Dallas Clients and the IRS Problems They Bring
The jobs are different, but the cases start the same way: money came in, not enough tax went out, and the IRS added penalties every month after.
Small Business Owners With Payroll
Behind on 941 deposits, or getting letters about a trust fund penalty? We file the missing quarters, get new deposits back on schedule, and work the old balance into a program the IRS will consider.
Finance and Corporate Professionals
Bonuses and stock vests get a flat 22% withheld, and a high bracket leaves the rest for April. If the balance is more than you can pay at once, we line up a payment plan before the IRS starts collecting.
Real Estate Agents and Investors
Commission checks come with nothing withheld, and a slow market makes April worse. We file the open years with your real expenses and set up a plan that fits the closings you're actually getting.
Restaurant and Bar Owners
Thin margins, tipped staff, and payroll every two weeks. When a slow season eats the tax deposits, the IRS can levy the business account. We request a release once a plan is moving.
Medical and Dental Practices
Practice owners juggle staff payroll, equipment loans, and their own estimated taxes. A short cash crunch can leave both the business and the owner owing. We sort out which balance is which and deal with each one.
Salons, Barbers, and Cash Businesses
Booth rent, cash tips, and card payments all get reported somewhere. If the IRS sees income you didn't report, a notice follows. We reconcile the records and answer the IRS with real numbers.
Small business
When a Dallas Business Falls Behind on Payroll Taxes
The income tax, Social Security, and Medicare you hold back from employees' paychecks were never the company's money. The IRS calls them trust fund taxes and chases them harder than almost any other balance. A small shop in Dallas that skips a few deposits to make rent lands right in that spot.
If the business can't pay, the IRS can assess the trust fund recovery penalty against the people who had the power to pay and didn't. That might be the owner, an officer, or whoever signed the checks. Paying the landlord or a supplier first, while the deposits sat unpaid, counts against you.
You do get a window. The IRS mails a letter proposing the penalty, and you have 60 days to appeal it. Keeping this quarter's deposits current matters just as much, because the IRS expects new taxes paid before it will talk about a plan for the old ones.
Deadline relief
Three Times the IRS Moved Deadlines for Dallas County
A postponed deadline gives you more time to file and pay. It doesn't shrink the tax. When we pull transcripts for clients in Dallas, one of these years is often where the trouble started.
-
March 2020
COVID-19
The federal filing and payment deadline moved from April 15 to July 15, 2020, for every taxpayer.
-
February 2021
Winter Storm Uri
Every Texas county, Dallas County included, had until June 15, 2021, to file and pay.
-
April 2024
Spring Storms and Tornadoes
Storms starting April 26 earned Dallas County an extension to November 1, 2024.
If a disaster year knocked your filing off track, we rebuild the missing returns from IRS wage and income transcripts and your bank records, then deal with what's owed.

Uneven pay
Bonuses, Commissions, and the April Surprise
Plenty of people in Dallas make good money that doesn't arrive as a steady paycheck. Finance and corporate jobs pay large annual bonuses. Real estate agents and sales reps live on commission. Consultants bill on a 1099. Each one opens a gap between what was withheld and what you owe.
An employer can withhold a flat 22% on a bonus, and stock that vests counts as pay too. If your bracket is higher, the difference waits for you at filing. Commission and 1099 income usually has nothing withheld, so the full tax shows up in April along with self-employment tax.
When that balance is more than you can cover, file anyway. The late-filing penalty runs 5% a month, ten times the 0.5% charged for paying late. Get the return in on time, then let us set up a plan for whatever you can't pay that day.
The IRS here
The IRS and the Tax Court on Commerce Street
Downtown Dallas has both ends of an IRS dispute under one roof. The Earle Cabell Federal Building at 1100 Commerce Street holds the IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center in Room 121 and a U.S. Tax Court courtroom in Room 726. The IRS runs a second assistance center up in Farmers Branch.
Both assistance centers work by appointment through 844-545-5640. Most collection cases never need a visit, though. They're handled by phone and mail, or by a revenue officer when a balance is large or has been open a long time. With Power of Attorney on file, those calls come to us.
Tax Court is where you go if an audit ends with a notice of deficiency you disagree with. You have 90 days to file a petition, and the IRS can't give you more time. A filed petition keeps your options open, including settling with IRS Appeals before any trial.
Discreet help
You Don't Have to Explain How It Happened
Owing the IRS can feel like something to hide. Plenty of the people who call us haven't told anyone, and some stopped opening the mail a while ago. That's far more common than it feels, and it's nothing we judge.
Your consultation is free and confidential. Once you hire us and Power of Attorney is on file, the IRS deals with us, so the calls and the back-and-forth stop landing on you.
How We Keep It Discreet
- A free, confidential first conversation
- No judgment about how it happened
- Once Power of Attorney is filed, the IRS contacts us
- Phone, secure document portal, and video, with no office visit

Tax Resolution Services for Dallas Individuals and Businesses
A lot of people who owe the IRS money in Dallas are doing fine on paper: a business with payroll, a commission career, a good salary with a bonus that came up short on withholding. These are the tax resolution services we use to settle IRS debt or turn it into a payment you can plan around, explained for Dallas County.
IRS payment plans
IRS Payment Plans and Installment Agreements in Dallas
$3,034 a month
IRS 2026 housing and utilities allowance for a family of four in Dallas County.
If you can't pay the full balance at once, an installment agreement is usually the first thing we look at for clients in Dallas. Balances of $50,000 or less generally qualify for a streamlined plan, which skips the full financial disclosure.
Bigger balances bring Form 433-A, where the IRS checks your spending against its own allowances. Dallas County's 2026 housing and utilities figure for a family of four is $3,034 a month. A mortgage in Richardson or Coppell can easily run past that, and the IRS will want to know why.
An enrolled agent on our team prepares the 433-A with you, so the plan reflects your real costs, including business expenses if you're self-employed.
Fresh Start
What the IRS Fresh Start Program Means in Dallas
$10,000
The balance below which the IRS generally doesn't file a lien, under the 2011 Fresh Start changes.
The IRS rolled out Fresh Start in 2011, when plenty of self-employed people and small business owners were still recovering from the recession. It loosened old rules rather than creating a new program: a $10,000 lien filing threshold, streamlined payment plans up to $50,000, and a more realistic way of judging Offers in Compromise.
For an owner in Dallas, that can mean a plan without a public lien showing up when a lender runs a records search. Be skeptical of anyone selling "Fresh Start enrollment." There's nothing to enroll in, and the IRS decides each case on its own facts.
- No lien filing generally under $10,000
- Streamlined plans up to $50,000 without full financial forms
- Offers based on realistic collection potential
Wage garnishment
How to Stop an IRS Wage Garnishment in Dallas
111,545 jobs
In finance and insurance in Dallas County (BLS, 2024 annual average), steady paychecks an IRS levy reaches easily.
An IRS wage garnishment follows a set order. A CP504 warns that a levy is coming. LT11 or Letter 1058 is the final notice, and it starts a 30-day clock to request a Collection Due Process hearing. After that, the IRS can send the levy to your employer.
In Dallas, many of those levies land on salaried office jobs. Finance and insurance alone employ more than 111,000 people in Dallas County. Payroll sends the IRS everything above the Publication 1494 exempt amount each pay period, and it continues until the IRS issues a release.
Nobody wants HR handling a levy. The way out is usually a payment plan or hardship status, since the IRS generally can't levy while an installment agreement is in effect. We file Power of Attorney and request the release once that's moving.
Offer in Compromise
Offer in Compromise Help in Dallas
$339 a month
IRS 2026 operating allowance for one car in the DFW metro area.
An Offer in Compromise is how you settle IRS debt for less than you owe, and it only works when the IRS agrees it can't collect the full amount before the collection statute expiration date. You file Form 656 and Form 433-A (OIC), pay a $205 fee, and include 20% of the offer if you're proposing a lump sum.
The IRS calculates what it could collect from your assets and future income. For transportation, it allows $339 a month per car in the DFW metro to operate a vehicle. Business owners in Dallas also have equity in equipment and receivables counted, so the math gets detailed.
We work through that math before you pay any fee. If the offer won't hold up, we tell you plainly.
Liens and levies
IRS Lien and Levy Help for Dallas Businesses and Households
21 days
The bank's hold on levied funds, often the same account that covers payroll.
City figures put 82% of businesses in Dallas under 20 employees, and in a business that size, a bank levy can freeze the account payroll runs through. The bank holds the money for 21 days before sending it. We use that time to request a bank levy release backed by a plan the IRS can accept.
A lien works differently. It doesn't take money. It's a public claim on everything you own, and it turns up when a lender pulls records for a line of credit, an equipment loan or a commercial lease.
Depending on the goal, we can ask the IRS to discharge a property from the lien, subordinate it so a refinance can close, or withdraw it once you're paying by direct debit.
Back taxes
Back Taxes and Unfiled Tax Returns in Dallas
40,397 jobs
In real estate across 4,698 Dallas County businesses (BLS, 2024), where commission pay usually has no withholding.
Real estate alone accounts for more than 40,000 private jobs in Dallas County. Agents, brokers and the consultants who work around them are often paid on commission or a 1099, and when the market slows, setting money aside for taxes slips. That's a common start to back taxes in Dallas.
Once returns go unfiled, the IRS may file a substitute return using only the income it can see, with none of your business costs. We pull your transcripts, rebuild the missing years with real expenses, and file them before talking about the balance.
Business owners may also have unfiled 941 payroll tax returns. Getting current on those quarters is the price of entry for any IRS program.
Currently Not Collectible
Currently Not Collectible Status in Dallas
$2,199 a month
IRS 2026 housing and utilities allowance for one person in Dallas County.
Income can drop fast in Dallas: a layoff, a dry spell between closings, a business that closed its doors. If paying the IRS anything would leave you unable to cover basic living costs, the IRS can mark your account currently not collectible and stop levies while your finances recover.
The IRS judges that against its own figures. A single adult in Dallas County gets a 2026 housing and utilities allowance of $2,199 a month. We document your actual costs so the hardship is clear.
CNC isn't forgiveness. Interest and penalties keep adding up, a lien can still be filed, and the IRS reviews your income again later. The collection statute expiration date keeps running, though.
Penalty abatement
IRS Penalty Abatement in Dallas
Nov. 1, 2024
The IRS deadline for Dallas County after the spring 2024 storms (TX-2024-13).
Penalty abatement can take failure-to-file and failure-to-pay penalties off a Dallas balance. The IRS grants it through first-time relief for people with a clean recent history, or for reasonable cause, like a serious illness or a disaster that kept you from filing.
Dallas County has had three recent IRS postponements: to July 15, 2020 for COVID-19, to June 15, 2021 after Winter Storm Uri, and to November 1, 2024 after the spring 2024 storms. The 2024 release also abated penalties on payroll deposits due between April 26 and May 13, 2024, as long as they were made by May 13.
IRS audits
IRS Audit Help and Representation in Dallas
2 IRS centers
In Dallas County: 1100 Commerce St. downtown and 4050 Alpha Rd. in Farmers Branch. Appointments: 844-545-5640.
If an audit moves past letters, it may mean meeting an examiner in person. In Dallas the IRS works out of the Earle Cabell Federal Building at 1100 Commerce Street, with a second center in Farmers Branch. An enrolled agent with your Power of Attorney can attend for you.
The same building hosts U.S. Tax Court trial sessions in Room 726. If an audit ends in a notice of deficiency, you have 90 days to petition, and that deadline doesn't move.
Audits of joint returns sometimes raise innocent spouse relief questions, especially after a divorce. We look at that, along with any payroll tax exposure on a business return.
