IRS Tax Relief for FedEx Delivery Drivers Get Help With a Garnished Paycheck or Back Taxes

Updated

You get a W-2 and taxes come out of every check, so a bill from the IRS can feel like it came out of nowhere. It usually traces back to a W-4 that withheld too little, a side gig, or a year that never got filed, and we help you deal with it, including a garnishment that has already started.

How it happens

How a Driver With a W-2 Can Still Owe the IRS

Most people who deliver FedEx packages work for a service provider, a separate company that hires its own drivers and runs their payroll (FedEx, service providers). In some markets FedEx also uses its own employee couriers (FedEx Form 10-K). Either way you're an employee with a W-2, and what comes out of each check depends on the Form W-4 you filled out on day one.

That form is easy to get wrong. If you hold two jobs at once, like a peak season route on top of another job, or your spouse works too, the W-4 asks you to account for all of it (IRS Form W-4). Skip that step and each paycheck is withheld as if it were your only income. Checking "exempt" means no income tax comes out at all.

Side work fills in the rest. Weekend app deliveries or a 1099 gig come with nothing withheld, and you owe self-employment tax on top of income tax. You can cover it by having extra taken out of your driving paycheck, but few drivers are ever told that, so the shortfall shows up in April as a balance due.

IRS problems

The IRS Problems FedEx Drivers Bring Us

A lot of them are a few thousand dollars that grew while the letters sat in a drawer. Some are a garnishment that showed up on a pay stub with no warning you remember getting.

Wage Garnishment on Your Paycheck

An IRS wage levy takes everything above your exempt amount every payday until it's released. For a single driver paid weekly with no dependents, that exempt amount is $309.62 in 2026. We file Power of Attorney and ask for a release tied to a plan you can actually live on.

A W-4 That Withheld Too Little

Two jobs at once, a working spouse who wasn't counted, or an exempt box left checked can each leave a balance at filing time. We find which one it was, figure what's owed with penalties, and set up the old balance so the new paychecks stop adding to it.

An IRS Lock-In Letter

When the IRS decides your withholding is too low, it can tell your employer to withhold at a set rate starting 60 days after the letter. After that, payroll can't lower it without IRS approval. We help you answer it with a corrected W-4 and a supporting statement.

Side Gig Income on a 1099

App deliveries or weekend 1099 work come with no withholding and self-employment tax on top. The IRS gets copies of those 1099s whether or not they made it onto your return, so we match your records against your IRS transcript before we resolve anything.

Years You Didn't File

With W-2 income, a missing year sometimes means the IRS owes you. Refunds have to be claimed within three years of the due date, and the IRS holds newer refunds while older returns are missing. We file the missing years and sort out which ones owe and which ones pay you.

Refunds Kept for an Old Balance

A CP49 notice means the IRS applied all or part of your refund to a tax debt, and it keeps doing that while a balance is open. If your family plans around that refund, we look at penalty relief and every program that could shrink the balance itself.

What Delivery Drivers Earn and Why a Wage Levy Hurts

Light truck drivers, the BLS job category for van and small-truck delivery, earned a median of $21.57 an hour in May 2025, and one in ten made less than $30,800 a year (BLS, light truck drivers). That's a paycheck with very little slack in it.

A wage levy doesn't leave room for slack. It keeps the exempt amount from Publication 1494 for you and sends the rest to the IRS every payday. A bonus paid on its own check can go entirely to the IRS, and if you work two jobs, the IRS can apply your exemption to one and take 100% of the other (IRS, wage levies).

Wage garnishment

How an IRS Wage Levy Works on a Driver's Paycheck

Before the IRS levies wages, it has to send a final notice at least 30 days ahead, and that notice carries your right to a Collection Due Process hearing (IRC § 6330). Then Form 668-W goes to your employer, and payroll generally gets at least one full pay period before it has to send anything (IRS, levies on employees).

Payroll also hands you a Statement of Dependents and Filing Status, and you have three days to return it. If you don't, the exempt amount is figured as if you were married filing separately with no dependents. For a single parent with two kids paid weekly, that's the difference between keeping $668.26 and keeping $309.62 (IRS Publication 1494).

The levy runs every payday until the debt is paid, other arrangements are made, or it's released. If it leaves you unable to cover basic, reasonable living expenses, the IRS says a wage levy causing that hardship must be released (IRS, levy hardship). We bring the financial proof and ask for the release with a plan attached. The IRS reviews it and decides.

How a wage levy moves

  1. The Final Notice and 30 Days

The IRS says it intends to levy. You can request a hearing within those 30 days.

  2. Form 668-W Reaches Payroll

Your employer gets the levy and usually one full pay period before the first deduction.

  3. Return the Statement in Three Days

Miss it, and your exempt amount drops to the lowest figure on the table.

  4. We Request the Release

With Power of Attorney filed, we show what you need to live on and propose a plan. The IRS decides.

$309.62 a week is what a single driver with no dependents keeps under a 2026 IRS wage levy. The IRS gets the rest.

Discreet help

You Don't Have to Explain How It Happened

Finding out your paycheck is about to be garnished, and knowing someone in payroll will see it, is a hard thing to sit with. You're far from the first driver in this spot, and it says nothing about how hard you work. We talk it through with you privately, and once we're your representative, the IRS deals with us.

Your consultation is free and confidential. Once you hire us and Power of Attorney is on file, the IRS deals with us, so the calls and the back-and-forth stop landing on you.

How We Keep It Discreet

  • A free, confidential first conversation
  • No judgment about how it happened
  • Once Power of Attorney is filed, the IRS contacts us
  • Phone, secure document portal, and video, with no office visit

How it works

How We Handle a FedEx Driver's IRS Case

You can't take a day off your route to sit on hold with the IRS, and you shouldn't have to. We work by phone, secure upload and video, before or after your shift, and once our Power of Attorney is filed the IRS contacts us instead of you.

  1. Free Consultation

A representative calls you back, listens to what is going on, and tells you whether we can help.

  2. Power of Attorney

We file Form 2848 so the IRS contacts us instead of you.

  3. Transcripts and Returns

We pull your IRS transcripts and get any missing returns filed.

  4. Request to the IRS

We submit the program request on your behalf. The IRS reviews and decides.

Timelines and outcomes are determined by the IRS based on the facts of each case. Results vary and are not guaranteed.

Frequently asked

FedEx Drivers and the IRS: Common Questions

How Much of My Paycheck Can the IRS Take?

Everything above your exempt amount, each pay period, until the levy is released. The exempt amount depends on your filing status and dependents. In 2026, a single driver paid weekly with no dependents keeps $309.62, and a married couple filing jointly with two kids, paid every two weeks, keeps $1,646.16. Return the statement payroll gives you within three days.

Will My Employer Find Out I Owe the IRS?

If there's a wage levy or a lock-in letter, yes, because payroll has to carry it out. Before that, the IRS deals with you, not your employer. Getting a plan in place before a levy is issued is the most private way through this.

Taxes Come Out of Every Check. How Can I Owe?

Usually the withholding was set for one job when you had two, a spouse's income wasn't counted, the exempt box stayed checked, or side gig income had nothing withheld. We pull your IRS wage and income transcript, find the gap, and resolve the balance.

Are FedEx Drivers Independent Contractors?

Most aren't. FedEx says the service providers it contracts with employ their own drivers, and FedEx also has employee couriers, so most drivers get a W-2. If you're paid on a 1099 under some other arrangement, your taxes work like a self-employed driver's, with estimated payments and self-employment tax.

Why Did the IRS Keep My Tax Refund?

A CP49 notice means the IRS applied your refund to a federal tax balance, which the law allows. It keeps happening each year while you owe. If the debt belongs only to your spouse, you may be able to claim your share back with Form 8379.

Is Innovative Tax Relief Part of FedEx?

No. We're an independent tax resolution firm, not affiliated with FedEx, and FedEx doesn't endorse or sponsor us. We mention FedEx only to describe the work our clients do. Nothing you tell us goes to your employer, and the only agency we deal with for you is the IRS.

What Does It Cost to Get Help With a Garnishment?

Fees depend on what your case needs and how complex it is, and we explain them up front before you decide. We don't charge a percentage of savings, and talking to us the first time is free.
